Gotochi Cards

January, 2014

I did a private swap with another Postcrosser for these cards for my collection of Gotochi cards.  I don't mind swapping Gotochi for Gotochi, but I don't swap them outside of the country.

Here's what I got.

I love these cards!  Aren't they great?! Thank you so much for swapping with me Junko!

Just curious - what is it about Gotochi cards? I have seen several times people say they won't send them - is it more expensive? Need to be in an envelope?

The cards themselves are 180 yen, regular postcards range between 100-160 yen. We can send them within Japan for 120 yen, a regular postcard is 50 yen (within Japan). To send them overseas we have to put them in an envelope, which raises our cost per card from 70 yen to 110 minimum. Some of the cards are quite large, they really vary in size, so we might not be able to send them for 110 yen, it might have to have more stamps than that on it.

I've sent two Gotochi cards overseas in envelopes, one arrived, the other one was never registered. It's too expensive to take the risk that it won't arrive.

Another thing is that they can be difficult to find. I'm in a smaller area so my post office usually has a good stock. I was away last weekend and I tried to get some from an area near Tokyo. I went to two different post offices, only one of them even had the cards...and that post office only had two out of five.

Does that help answer your question? Because of the odd shapes, they have to be handled separately by the post office, hence the added cost or the need for an envelope if sent overseas.

Thanks for your question :-)
