Luxembourg

August 29, 2015

This was a nice surprise...a fairly rare country and my first card from Luxembourg.  There is some German on the card which I couldn't translate I'm afraid.  The rest of the message goes like this...

"I am Simone, a German living in Luxembourg.  Luxembourg is a small country in Europe, framed by Germany, France and Belgium.  It is also the world's only Grand Duchy and did belong to the Netherlands till some 150 years ago.

This card shows sights in a border town from Luxembourg.  People from all over the world visit that town due to some kind of Catholic procession.

Best Wishes, Simone

Greetings from Echternach

I hope I write the monarch's name correctly.  According to Wikipedia, the man on the stamp is Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

Just a note to my readers.  I am on holiday now so may not be able to approve any comments until I return.

United States - Art/Book

August 29, 2015

This beautiful work of art came from Melissa in the USA.

She wrote, "Hello from California.  My name is Melissa.  About me, I love to bicycle (the fresh air, the exercise, the ability to go almost everywhere), read books (knowledge and escape into another person's life), practice yoga (it's calming effect and the physical benefits). And I love to write postcards!  Best wishes, Melissa"

The Reading Woman II
Lilian Westcott Hale (American, 1880-1963)
This is a lovely card.  Unfortunately the US Postal system put some marks on the card, but really it isn't that bad.  And look at the lovely cherry blossoms.  But wait....there's more to come.

These gorgeous stamps too! (Or is it three stamps?  Close up, the big one looks like two stamps.)  I believe it is probably celebrating the friendship and cherry trees that Japan shared with the USA. Too bad the cancellation stamp covers so much of it.

Germany

August 29, 2015

Peko sent this card to me from Germany.  I can't believe that he took the picture and made the card himself.  It's very well done!

He writes, "Hello and best regards from Wuppertal, the unique town, where trains can fly :-).  This is a card from my self produced collection, I sell to the shops in our town.  More see here (he refers to the lines in the middle of the card with his URL and contact info).

My hobby is photographing, and so I started to do this small business.  Best Wishes Peko"

Taiwan - Food

August 28, 2015

Smallrock sent this card to me from Taiwan and told me a lot about some of the customs in Taiwan.  It was very nice of her.  I would have liked to learn more about her though!

"Greetings from Taiwan!  Hi, my name is Smallrock and I live in Tainan City, it's the oldest city in Taiwan.  We have a special ritual during Lunar July 7 called "Do 16 Years." Parents would celebrate children's being 16 year-old and thank the blessing of Seven Star Goddess.  By this ritual, they can tell friends and family that the children are already adult and can get full pay (child labor got half pay a hundred years ago).  Happy Postcrossing

A very interesting transportation-related stamp.  I think I may have ridden on this train!

Taiwan - Food

August 28, 2015

I received this interesting card from Mishy.  She wrote an enthusiastic message on the back of the card.

"Hello Canadian, greeting from Taiwan.  This is very traditional food of Taiwan.  (There are some cats I hope you'll not mind.....)

I live in the south of Taiwan, and also can speak some Japanese.  I love Japanese culture.  Happy postcrossing.

It's a cute card and I like the idea of seeing traditional street food on a card.

I don't think I've seen this stamp before.  It's very nice.

Belarus

August 28, 2015

Natalia sent this with a lovely note about herself.  While I enjoy learning about the subject on the cards, I'm usually more interested in the person who sent the card!  Natalia did very well writing about herself.

She wrote, "Hello!  My name is Natalia.  I am writing from a beautiful city of Minsk, the capital of the Republic of Belarus.  I'm 29, and now I prepare to become a mother for the first time and this is very exciting for me.  I like to read different detectives and historical novels.  Now I'm reading the Agatha Christie.  It's very interesting.  I like animals, I like to have a good meal and admire beautiful things.
Happy :-) Postcrossing"

I don't really understand this stamp.  It looks a bit like a celebration during a war.  Do any of my readers know anything about it?

Singapore

August 28, 2015

Ching sent this card with a friendly note on the back.  She writes, "Greetings from Singapore!  Hope this card finds you well.  It is through Postcrossing I learnt about Gotochi cards.  Interesting :=) My sister got me a few Gotochi cards from her Japan business trips too.  Happy collection to us!  Regards, Ching"

Although this isn't a "proper" stamp, I rather like it as it isn't plain and boring!  What lovely orchids and there are many symbols of Singapore on it.

Germany

August 25, 2015

Anke sent this beautiful card with a few answers from my profile questions.  I enjoy it when someone actually reads what I wrote.

She said, " Hi!  I'm Anke, 51, a potter in a little village.  I love nature!  Movie-tipp: Cinema Paradiso!!
Book-tipp: The Book-Thief.
After a hot and sunny summer now autumn is coming with fog in the mornings! Love Anke"

This is a different set of German stamps.  I rather like it.  It is very peaceful looking.

Sadly, this ad card arrived without any personal message whatsoever.  I don't mind the ad card part, but I am sad that there was no message on the back.

Norway

August 12, 2015

Terje sent this card to me from Norway.  He had a short message on the back of the card. He wrote, "Hello.  This card are from my home region in the western part of Norway.  I like to travel and see new culture.  Have a nice day, Terje"

Sadly, the postcard had quite a battle to get here and was badly bent along the way.  You can see it on the scan, the other side is bent too, but not as badly.
By the Voss-Gudvangen Road.
In the background Stalheim Hotel.

The stamps are interesting, as are their arrangement.  I like the athletes, but as a farmer's kid, I get a kick out of the other two as well.
